“Wildlife artist Marianne Birkby is inspired by the creatures that call Cumbria home. From dragonflies over Foulshaw Moss, ducklings swimming in the reeds at Leighton Moss or a particular favourite – badgers.” Lancashire Life
“Marianne Birkby is among a select few wildlife artists whose images have the ability to take your breath away”. Westmorland Gazette
My childhood was largely spent in the Rusland Valley in the Lake District where artistic and maverick parents ran a unique mechanical music and curios museum. The beautiful Rusland Valley is where a keen interest in the natural world was developed which was to lead to a nomination for the Andrew Lees Memorial Award for conservation work. The interest in wildlife and the natural world also led to three years studying Scientific Illustration at Blackpool.
Publications: include work for the Medici Gallery, books have included “Wildlife in the Country” for Random House and “Dodo Who” for Kendal Museum, also the award winning Field Sketches and Guide Book for the Aquarium of the Lakes.
Curation: as well as solo exhibitions I have curated exhibitions and art trails featuring internationally acclaimed artists. Curated exhibitions have been featured in Cumbria Life and the Culture Guide of The Guardian.
Bespoke interpretation panels: for clients such as the National Trust, Rydal Hall and Local Authorities.
Demonstrations and teaching: from working with primary schools creating Wildlife Sound Pictures at the Coniston Water Festival to secondary schools and adults looking at “Future Language.” Demonstrations, talks and workshops are a big part of my art practice including working with art societies to explore aspects of painting the world of wildlife.
Underpinning all my work is a love of the natural world.
Please do not hesitate to contact me for more information should you wish to commission a painting or demonstration.
